The Two Speed Note Card
The Willamette Two-Speed Donkey shown here was one that was being used in the late 1930's which was near the end of the steam donkey era. The use of donkeys started in the late 1800's with the Dolbeer, which had a vertical drum and was quite primitive compared to the one depicted in this painting.
The steam donkey was replaced by the diesel-powered donkey because of it's simplicity, as well as the elimination of the great fire danger caused by the wood-burning steam donkeys.
