The Packer, Blank Cards
The western United States is very large; the number of camping areas are comparatively small, and easy-to-reach locations are likely to be as crowded as Main Street. There are still some fairly inaccessible spots, far from the beaten track, where motels and restaurants are unknown. Getting to these "spots" is best left to the professional packer who is equipped to take you to remote areas of scenic beauty and wonder.
Many hunters and most trail riders these days put themselves in the hands of professional packers - men and women whose business it is to see that backcountry visitors are mounted, guided, tented, fed, and generally made as secure and comfortable as possible.
The theme of this scene is one of "multiple-use forests"; forests where our great and renewable natural resource is used for commercial as well as recreational purposes. This scene is typical of central to southern Oregon's Cascade Mountain Range with its rich volcanic soil and ample water supply which is excellent for growing trees.
(Thanks to Mr. Dan Applebaker, Forester for the Modoc Lumber Co. and owner of Wilderness Mule Packing, for the details and information for this painting and story. Mr. Applebaker is shown in this painting with his pack string.)
