Coos Bay Number 10 Christmas Card
This "Saddle-tank" locomotive was owned and operated by the Coos Bay Lumber Company, Coos Bay, Oregon. It was one of 4 locomotives of this type built for them by the American Locomotive Company, Schenectady, New York (Numbers 9, 10, 11, and 12). Number 10, shown here, was built in 1928. Numbers 9 and 12 were later scrapped at Powers, Oregon; Number 11 is presently on display in San Diego, California, and Number 10 is owned by the O.P.&E. Railroad and is displayed at Cottage Grove, Oregon. Number 10 was able to negotiate railroad curves up to a maximum of 18 degrees and 6 percent grades on its trips from Powers to Eden Ridge. The trestle shown here was evidently constructed when this company used smaller Shay locomotives and carried lighter log loads. As heavier equipment was used, more bracing and support was added to the trestle. Coos Bay Lumber Company at one time owned and/or operated 2 sawmills, 1 plywood plant and 1 hardboard mill. Using 5 rod and 10 geared locomotives together with 277 sets of disconnected trucks and 32 flatcars, they brought in logs to their plants from 120,000 acres of prime timberland.
