The Shovel Christmas Card
This 1920s scene shows a P&H shovel at work building a logging railroad in the Cascade Mountains of Oregon. Shovels of this type were used throughout the Pacific Northwest for building railroads. The line extending from the shovel to the left was used for pulling a float (or sled).
On this float was carried fuel, tools, and supplies necessary to keep the shovel operating. The line also pulled along "mats" made of small logs or timbers that were used to help the flotation of the shovel when working or crossing soft ground or marshy areas. The chain around the arm just above the bucket was used for moving the mats into position. This type of road construction gave way to the bulldozer when it was developed in the 1930s. Soon after, railroads progressively gave way to the logging truck.
From the lands originally logged we are now hauling a second crop of timber over these same shovel-built "roads" - the same road bed, but now using trucks. And the timber being hauled is still the famous Douglas Fir - our great renewable, natural resource.
