Logging Shasta Red Fir Christmas Card
The Floyd Porteous Logging Company logged on land in 1954 owned by the Southern Pacific Land Company. The site was the south slope of Mount Shasta in California. In this painting, they are logging Shasta Red Fir (Abies magnifica shastensis) at an altitude of 5,000 feet. Floyd Porteous and Jim Nile (forester) are standing to the right observing loading procedures. The loader is a McVay Log Loader built in Klamath Falls, Oregon. The tractor is using a crawler-type steel arch to lift the front end of the logs for easier skidding and greater capacity. In this selective logging show, the bulldozer blade has been removed to reduce damage to standing trees.
The landing as shown here is one of the busiest places in a logging operation with logs being skidded from the woods; logging trucks arriving, loading and leaving; plus many other landing activities.
