Simpson's Tank Mallet Christmas Card
Simpson Logging Company's Baldwin Tank Mallet No. 13 is shown here bringing a trainload of logs out of the woods near Shelton, Washington. The No. 13 was rarely found on woods engines, possibly because of superstition associated with this number. Booth-Kelly Lumber Company of Springfield, Oregon, was the first to buy a tank mallet locomotive for logging, which was built by Baldwin in 1910 as a wood burner, later converted to oil. The 2-6-6-2 Baldwin tank mallets were manufactured especially for the woods of the northwest and were seldom found elsewhere.
