Mature Red Cedar Christmas Card

This scene depicts loggers preparing a platform from which to begin the undercut on this mature Western Red Cedar in the Cascade Mountains of the Pacific Northwest. Two to three men were usually required for the job on this size tree. The scaffolding was constructed of springboards and 2x10s.

The Western Red Cedar grows to a large or very large tree, with a tapering trunk. Foliage is resinous and aromatic. The wood is particularly resistant to rot. It is the chief wood for shingles and one of the most important for siding and boat building.

The Indians of the Northwest Coast carved their famous stotem poles and split lumber for their lodges from this durable softwood. Indians also used the wood for boxes and dugout canoes. They used the fibrous inner bark of the tree for rope, roof thatching, blankets and cloaks.

The largest Western Red Cedar measures 21-feet in diameter, ranking second only to the Giant Sequoia.
