Snow Peak - Sound Forestry Christmas Card

Very seldom do I render an oil painting only from my imagination; this is one of the rarities. Although I have never been there nor seen photographs of the upper reaches of Crabtree Creek, this scene depicts what I feel would he a representation of that area in Oregon.

In the Snow Peak region in 1998, Willamette Industries had 31 company loggers operating 3-1/2 sides. There were 13 cutters, 2 road construction and maintenance crews comprising 9 men, 6 mechanics and 18 log truck drivers. Moreover, the Snow Peak operation employed contract loggers plus many other professional-type people.

Riparian areas along all streams in Oregon are vitally important to the ecology of the forest and stream area. Salmon migration, as well as other fish, rely on the good stream conditions, which are pictured in this painting.

Streams with a minimum width of 10 feet and a maximum of 100 feet have what is called a Riparian Management Area. Unless otherwise defined, the RMA is the general area along a stream that is equal to 3 times the width of the stream. Generally speaking, the RMA is a zone bordering streams that are left in a natural state; leaving downed trees, snags, brush, etc.
