On the Fire Line Christmas Card

In the world of wildland fire, smoke jumpers are the "special troops," dropping in areas with difficult or no access to catch fires when they are still small. These "troops" are well-trained veterans of the war against wildfires, ready to risk their lives to battle fires throughout our country wherever they are needed.
The "El Nino" phenomenon was identified off the western coast of South America as early as the 1600s. Unusually warm waters are blamed on this phenomenon which affects weather patterns in various parts of the world. The unusually warm waters appear off the coast of Peru in December. The phenomenon was called "El Nino" after the Christ child because of its appearance around Christmas time. Though El Nino can affect temperate climates in other seasons, too, most El Nino winters are mild across the United States.

The El Nino has been blamed for much of the weather conditions bringing on the fire danger from coast to coast.

Our firefighters have responded to this danger valiantly whether the need is in California, Florida, or any of the states in between. We citizens can be very thankful and proud of these brave people and for their ready response and abilities.

(Thanks to Mr. Doug Coyle, President, North American Wildfire, Ltd., for details in this story and painting.)
