The emigrants, consisting of some Europeans, but mostly American-born, were seeking fertile land to establish new homes. Missionaries and mountain men had told them of the beautiful, fertile country that existed on the other side of the continent. The emigrants were not rich; many were trying to escape economic hardship. But neither were they without money, as it cost up to $1,500 to outfit a family for the trip. This scene depicts a re-enactment of a wagon train in Western Montana, with the Mission Mountains showing in the background. Present-day draft horse enthusiasts have traveled along the Flathead River between Polson and Dixon, Montana over the past 25 years. The annual wagon train ride covers approximately 80 miles, traveling among the remnants of 100+ year old homesteads. These enthusiasts, after spending a week living out of covered wagons, have a clearer understanding of the hardships the original emigrants endured in starting a new life in the West. Most of these homesteaders lived off the land by farming, raising livestock and utilizing products from the forest for shelter and a source of heat. Today, many of these old homesteads throughout the West have reverted to managed, native pasture-lands and forests. The forests in this region are made up of Ponderosa Pine, Larch, Rocky Mountain Juniper and Douglas Fir. Quaking Aspen, the most widely distributed tree in North Americas is also found in this region. Participation in this wagon train venture over the years has varied from just a couple to over 25 wagons and 300+ people. |
