Ponderosa Pine Forest Christmas Card

The Ponderosa Pine is the most widely distributed and common pine in North America. David Douglas, the Scottish botanical explorer, found the Ponderosa Pine in 1826 and named it for its ponderous, or heavy wood. This valuable timber tree is the most commercially important western pine. It is the State Tree of Montana.

This scene is from South Central Oregon, depicting a cattle ranch in Ponderosa Pine country. Cattlemen also lease timberland and range land from the B.L.M. (Bureau of Land Management) and from the U.S.F.S. (United States Forest Service) for cattle grazing. This grazing land is also shared with wild horses, elk, deer, antelope, and other wildlife.

Horses and antelope usually prefer the open range land as speed afoot is their main defense against predators.

In this day and age, the forests of North America are needed more than ever to help fill the demand for products made from wood. It is very important that we continue to exercise good stewardship over this great, renewable and multiple-use natural resource.

(Thanks to Dan Applebaker, Forester for the Modoc Lumber Co., Klamath Falls, Oregon, for help with this story and scene.)
