The Douglas Fir Christmas Tree Christmas Card

It is once again time for the Christmas tree to become an important part of many of the American household decorations as the holiday season approaches.

In the middle ages the feast of Adam and Eve was held on December 24th; its symbol was a fir tree hung with red apples called the Paradise Tree.

Today more than 90% of the Christmas trees are plantation grown.

Archibald Menzies, a naturalist on george Vancouver's 1791 expedition is credited as being the first white man to discover the Douglas Fir. The tree was named for a Scot, David Douglas, who conducted the definitive study of the species in 1825.

Douglas fir from the West Coast is one of the stronest woods, pound for pound, that has ever been tested. It not only enjoys an outstanding reputation for dependability in heavy and light construction, it also is one of the favored trees at Christmas time. Over 34 million American families will bring a natural Christmas tree into their homes to help create a warm, friendly setting for their Christmas celebration.
