Shay Along the Santiam Christmas Card
This painting depicts the Shay #3, owned by the Silver Falls Timber Company, bringing in a load of logs near the Santiam River in western Oregon. The river was named after the Santiam Indians, a Kalapooian tribe living near the Santiam River. During the "glory days" of logging, Silver Falls Timber Company had many miles of logging railroad. The last trainload of logs taken out of the woods by this company was in 1936. A devastating forest fire, which has always been the greatest menace faced by loggers, marked the end of the company. Being good stewards of our natural resources compels all of us to use care when visiting our forestlands.
