Topping a Douglas Fir Tree Christmas Card
A high-climber is shown here performing his dangerous work of topping a Douglas fir tree at about 180 feet above the ground. Three Fingered Jack Mountain appears in the background.
Sometimes the high-climber did the rigging of the tree so it could be used as a spar tree for yarding logs to the landing and loading logs onto trucks.
Topping spar trees is pretty much a thing of the past. Portable, mechanized poles are used today. The trees are generally smaller and the equipment is faster and more economical.
