Wanigan on the Clearwater Christmas Card

Primitive man learned to build strong rafts of logs. On these rafts he embarked upon long and hazardous voyages by river.

The wanigan of the western river log drive was just such a craft. With the exception of its superstructure it was constructed without benefit of nails, bolts, wire or other metal fastenings. It was built that way because no other raft without highly buoyant logs and flexible cross members of vine maple or equivalent, all bound together with withes of thorn or wild cherry, could withstand the twisting and pounding action of a driving stream.

Three wanigans comprised the flotilla that brought up the rear of the Clearwater 100-mile log drive, conducted by Potlatch forests, Inc. of Lewiston, Idaho. One wanigan carried the cook-house, another the bunk-house (as shown in this painting) and a third, somewhat smaller, carried the little double drum D4 Cat tractor used in breaking up log jams and hauling stranded logs out of the river's pockets. The two larger wanigans measured 22 x 80 feet while the smaller raft was 18 x 60 feet.
