00-12CC Harvesting Black Cherry Christmas CardThis scene is located in the heart of the finest Black Cherry hardwood forest in the world. It is found within the Allegheny National Forest in the northwest corner of Pennsylvania. The fall season colors the trees brilliant reds and yellows.Nearly all the Black Cherry harvested is sawed into lumber and remanufactured into a variety of valuable items. In addition to wood products it is also used to make wild cherry syrup, a cough medicine obtained from the tree's bark. Jelly and wine are prepared from its fruit. Tall trunks sometimes produce logs up to 50-ft. long containing 5,000 board feet of wood, with forks that are trimmed and bucked into shorter logs. Some of the old-growth trees reach 150-ft. in height and 6-ft. at the stump. Occasionally some will measure 90- to 95-ft. before the forks are reached. Black Cherry forks are cut out of the tree's crown to prevent damage to the very valuable tree when it is felled. Bob Adams is shown high in a 140-ft. Black Cherry tree, removing a fork in the tree.
