Homeward Journey, Giclee Art Print

"March 23, 1806. The rain seased and it became fair about meridian, at which time we loaded our canoes. & at 1 P.M. left Fort Clatsop on our homeward bound journey." John Ordway

Also on this date, Fort Clatsop was presented to the neighboring Indians.

On their homeward journey the Nez Perce Indians, once again, befriended the explorers. A chief provided them with horses to eat - and refused any payment.

On August 17, 1806 Charbonneau, his wife, Sacagawea and son, Little Baptiste, left the expedition to remain in the wilderness.

In 1812, at Fort Manuel, a fur trading post in what is now South Dakota; Sacagawea gave birth to a daughter, Lisette. But that winter Sacagawea grew ill with fever and died.

True to his promise to Sacagawea, Captain Clark took custody of her children.

September 23, 1806 was their final day as the Corps of Discovery.
