The Ocean Bear Note Card
The Ocean Bear is a 302-ft. x 72-ft. x 19-ft. log barge built in 1975 by the Todd Shipyard at Galveston, Texas. Alaska Pulp Corporation was the original owner and commissioned the barge to haul pulp and saw logs to Sitka and Wrangell for their mills. Presently there are other barges that haul logs on this coast, but the Ocean Bear is the only one specifically built for that purpose. She will haul up to 1,250,000 board feet of logs. She was the only U.S.-built log barge on the West Coast, and the first barge to haul logs from Yakutat, Icy Bay, and the Kodiak area. Her presence has had a major impact on log transportation on the Pacific Northwest coast, especially in the Washington and Oregon areas.
This oil painting shows the Tlingit village of Hoonah in the background. Hoonah has a population of about 800 and is located on Chichagof's northeast coast near the mouth of Port Frederick. Tlingit legend tells of people from Glacier Bay settling this "place where the north wind doesn't blow" during the last ice age. The Tlingit culture persists - traditional activities continue year-round and the native language is still spoken. Hoonah is one of the few villages listed on the original Russian maps of Alaska.
The logs are owned by the Sealaska Timber Corporation, a regional native corporation, and are destined for Roseburg Forest Products' plywood plant in Coos Bay, Oregon. The logged area in the background was done by Whitestone Logging for the Huna Totem Corporation who also owns timber around Hoonah. Regeneration of these logged areas is generally accomplished naturally. The seedlings come back so thick they have to be thinned in order to let sunlight in so other plants can thrive, allowing deer and other wildlife to survive.
