Buck Mountain Lookout Note Card

Buck Mountain Lookout was in operation in the Willamette National Forest in 1960 overlooking the McRae Creek and Blue River drainages. This lookout sat atop the 4,768-foot mountain on the alert for possible forest fires in the dense, predominantly Douglas Fir forest of Western Oregon.

Forest fires have burned millions of acres of timber over the years. 1910 was on of the disastrous years.

Arizona, California, Oregon and Washington burned in that long, dry summer. Five million acres burned in all, but Idaho and Montana had the worst of it; more than three million acres consumed in 1,730 fires.

Through the first half of the century lookouts such as the Buck Mountain Lookout sprouted on mountain tops throughout the West. Many of them used the same basic design in construction.

Fire detection devices, smoke-jumper bases have lessened the need for the old-style lookouts. The National Forest Fire Fighting Center is in Boise, Idaho; they can mobilize 15,000 firefighters in three days.
