Longleaf Pine Forest, Blank Cards

Steam locomotive #9 is shown here in a Longleaf Pine forest about 1905. The locomotive and timberlands are owned by the T.R. Miller Mill Co. of Brewton, Alabama. The mill has been in operation since 1848 and their forests are primarily Longleaf Pine. A section of their company's history states that, "…logs were transported by oxen and water to the first mill, which was water-powered, on Cedar Creek from 1848–1892. In 1892, the mill was moved to Brewton …this was a steam-powered mill. Logs were brought to the mill by water until 1904. From 1904–1905 …by railroad and water. From 1905–1940 …by railroad. From 1940 …by truck."

Timber is only one of many resources found on T.R. Miller's 200,000 acres of timberland. Much of the forested land contains lakes, streams, and rivers. There are also game preserves and breeding areas for wildlife which are under intensive company management.

(Thanks to Mr. Steven R. Layton for his help with the background for this painting and story.)
