8-11AP Elk Range, Art PrintThe forest is the home of this magnificent elk. It is also a place where trees, shrubs, ground cover plants, animals, insects and many other living creatures coexist. Each has a specific function and could be beneficial to each other and to human beings as long as a healthy balance prevails in the forest's ecosystem. It is the responsibility of the human race to manage its environment including the vast forest covered land. The better our stewardship practices, the better the chance for the existence of all living things. Some fragile alpine areas and others with rare plant and animal life may do the best without much human interference. But most other areas provide the most benefit if managed under the "multipile use" concept. Under this type of management practice there is room for growing and harvesting trees to be used for a large variety of forest products; there is room for a healthy wildlife population, where elk and deer may roam and graze freely in the open areas and find refuge under the shelter of timber stands; there is room for the fish to populate and grow in the many forest streams and lakes; there is room for humans to hike, camp and fish while enjoying the forest without disturbing its harmony. The forest and its habitat indeed provide many benefits, but it must be managed and used wisely. |
