Mountain Man's Home Note Card
Some mountain men of the west built permanent-type log cabins where they stayed for the few months during the dead of winter and the heat of summer. Next to his guns the most important possessions of a mountain man were 4–6 beaver traps, costing him about $12 to $16 each.
There were 2 trapping seasons - the first was in the mid to late fall when the fur had become "prime" - it lasted until the ice and snow made travel and trapping impossible. The second began in the spring when ice began to break up, and continued until the quality of the fur deteriorated because of warm weather.
