Winter Holiday Note Card
This scene depicts a homestead in the early 1900s getting ready for the winter holiday season, indicated by the wreath hanging on the wall of the cabin. A hungry raccoon looks for scraps of food which may have been left by the homesteader after cutting firewood.
In the winter (after October) there is always a danger of being "snowed in" at high elevations. Many times the snow depth reaches 12-ft. and even deeper. The Donner party's wagon train was caught in an October snow storm. For weeks they experienced extreme hunger before they were rescued.
Even today when traveling over high mountain passes in winter it is a necessity to carry tire chains in case of heavy snows.
