One Horsepower Note Card

Horse logging has been a method of yarding logs for many years. In 1946 the artist was employed by a livestock feed company as a truck driver who delivered half-ton loads of special high-energy horse feed to a logger in the Coast Range Mountains near Horton, Oregon. This particular logger worked a string of draft horses for this very purpose.

Although not widely used today, this method of logging is still employed by small operators, or in areas that cannot be logged using tractors because of potential damage to trees by compacting soils. Horse logging is especially desirable in thinning dense stands of young timber.
