In this scene, oxen are used to cross-haul Longleaf Yellow Pine logs onto a flatcar. This system of loading was quite common throughout the South where this action took place near DeRidder, Louisiana, around the turn of the century.

Railroads found quick application in the South where level land made for low-cost operations. Many times spur tracks were laid about every 800 feet with little or no beds under very small ties.
