This painting shows one of the two McGiffert Loaders used by the Medford Corporation, working in the Butte Falls area northeast of Medford, Oregon prior to World War II. Steam operated rigs gave way to diesel power in the 1940's and 50's because, among other reasons, diesel was not quite so complicated and it didn't pose as great a fire danger.

The McGiffert Loader (also called a Jammer) straddled the railroad track and empty logging flat cars passed beneath it for loading. This arrangement was favored in the Central/Eastern Oregon Ponderosa Pine country and the White Pine regions of Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan.

The main species logged around Mt. McLoughlin, shown in the background, were Douglas Fir and Ponderosa Pine.
