This Oregon logger has just put his tape into the butt of a Sitka Spruce and will move up the tree to mark the length of logs for bucking. The bright colored objects in the logger's hip pockets are plastic wedges. These lightweight tools have replaced the heavy iron wedges of the past.

The Sitka Spruce thrives along the Oregon Coast as well as other areas along the coastline of the Pacific Northwest. When harvested and dried, spruce is lightweight and very strong. Sitka Spruce from Oregon was the material used in the manufacture of airplanes for World War I.
