Images: Springboarding on a Sitka Spruce

This Pacific Northwest scene took place in the early 1900s. Fallers placed their springboards high above the twisted grain in the base of the Sitka Spruce. With present day power saws and better wood utilization trees are cut close to the ground to avoid waste.

The unusual characteristics of Sitka Spruce enable it to meet the requirements of a wide variety of items - from box lumber to piano sounding boards, from general construction lumber to the finest of clears used by cabinet makers, airplane, and ladder manufacturers. Extremely resilient, it has the highest strength-to-weight ratio of any wood in the world.
