Trail to Mt. Jefferson, Giclee, 18

Trail to Mt. Jefferson, Giclee, 18" x 24", Framed

The Whitewater Trail, shown here, leads to Oregon’s second highest mountain (10,495’).  Mt. Jefferson was named by explorers Lewis and Clark on Sunday, March 30, 1806, in honor of President Jefferson.   This mountain is in the Mt. Jefferson Wilderness Area which calls attention to one if the more sensitive subjects in the west which is timber utilization and wilderness allocation.  Good stewardship of our country’s natural resources is the responsibility of highly trained foresters  and other technical people.  Our forests need to be managed wisely to best utilize every resource.

The Lidgerwood - Giclee, 18

The Lidgerwood - Giclee, 18" x 24", Framed

The Lidgerwood was a famous big skidder, a large powerful machine carrying a folding steel tower and was used both for skidding and loading.  The one shown here is at work in 1924 at the Clark & Wilson operation in western Oregon.  The machine was among the most impressive of all the equipment used in the woods.  These goliaths weighed from 300 to 400 tons.  The weight on the track was brutal, especially when taken into operation over new fills and freshly excavated cuts.  More than one of them, finding a soft spot in the grade, toppled down into a canyon.  But the loggers always managed to fish them out and put them back into operation again.

The Forest Ranger - Giclee, 18

The Forest Ranger - Giclee, 18" x 24", Framed

This scene depicts an early-day Forest Ranger in a remote area of central Oregon.  In the early 1900’s these Forest Rangers were essentially custodians of the forests, protecting them against fire, game poachers, timber and grazing trespassers and exploiters.  In those years Forest Rangers and Forest Supervisors were used to trail life, many of them being former cowboys, trappers and woodsmen.
